Hotels in Retiro Madrid

A park, a district and a symbol of Madrid's beauty and diversity, Retiro is the Spanish capital's back garden. This beautiful area is dominated by the oasis-like Parque del Buen Retiro, a 320 acre splash of green at the heart of this bustling city. While many corners of the park are peaceful and deserted, a number of pathways teem throughout the day with local families out on a stroll, street performers displaying their various talents, musicians filling the air with music and tourists taking it all in. To take the pulse of Madrid, simply wander through Retiro - you'll find a city bursting with life, vigour and happiness.

This former royal park was first opened to the public way back in 1868, having served as a private retreat since 1632. Inside the park visitors will find the excellent Museo del Ejercito; a Spanish army museum that is housed in one of only two palaces to survive the Napoleonic wars. Notable attractions inside the museum include the sword of El Cid and the cross that accompanied Christopher Columbus on his journey to the New World.

Aside from the park, the Retiro district neighbours the Prado Museum and boasts some of the most delightful streets and squares found anywhere in the city. Slightly to the east of the centre, visitors will discover a great range of pleasant hotels here, plus a decent smattering of shops and restaurants.
